The Ministry of Education has disclosed that it is working to secure the necessary financial clearance to recruit an estimated 50,000 teachers required to address the growing staffing deficit within the Ghana Education Service (GES).

The revelation was made by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during a parliamentary session on Friday, May 29, 2026, where he provided updates on ongoing teacher recruitment efforts and the challenges facing the country’s education sector.

According to the Minister, although government has already commenced the recruitment of approximately 7,000 teachers nationwide and nearly 3,000 lecturers for tertiary institutions, the current numbers fall far short of the actual staffing needs across the country.

Mr. Iddrisu explained that a comprehensive national assessment conducted by education authorities indicates that Ghana requires a minimum of 50,000 additional teachers to adequately fill vacancies in schools and improve access to quality education.

He noted, however, that the recruitment of the full backlog remains dependent on the government’s fiscal capacity and the availability of budgetary allocations to absorb such a large workforce onto the public payroll.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, the Education Minister stated that while the need for teachers is significant, government must balance recruitment with financial sustainability.

“Currently, we are undertaking some recruitment of about 7,000 teachers across the country. And for the tertiary education level, close to 3,000 lecturers to be able to fill in the gap. But if you do a national assessment of our needs, we need a minimum of 50,000 teachers across the country, but that is subject to budget and the budget being able to absorb that,” he said.

The Minister’s remarks highlight the scale of the teacher shortage confronting Ghana’s education sector, particularly in rural and underserved communities where many schools continue to struggle with inadequate staffing.

To illustrate the challenge, Mr. Iddrisu cited the case of the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality, where approximately 176 teachers are reportedly being paid by parents and local communities due to the absence of government-employed teachers.

The situation, according to education stakeholders, reflects a broader national problem that requires urgent intervention through sustained recruitment and deployment of qualified teachers.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education remains optimistic about expanding recruitment opportunities if additional financial clearance is granted. The ongoing recruitment exercise is expected to help ease some of the pressure on schools, but officials acknowledge that much more needs to be done to eliminate the nationwide teacher deficit.

The Minister also announced that newly recruited teachers under the current exercise are expected to assume duty from July 1, 2026, as government continues efforts to strengthen human resource capacity within the education sector.

Education observers believe that securing financial clearance for the recruitment of the estimated 50,000 teachers could significantly improve teacher-to-student ratios, reduce pressure on existing staff, and enhance the overall quality of teaching and learning across Ghana.

For thousands of trained teachers awaiting employment, the Ministry’s latest announcement offers renewed hope that further recruitment opportunities could be rolled out once the necessary budgetary approvals are secured.
