1. Born on a Tennis Court 🎾

Surprisingly, the idea for the NSMQ was not conceived in a classroom but during a tennis game at the University of Ghana, Legon. Mr. Kwaku Mensa-Bonsu, then the Managing Director of Primetime, sparked the idea when he questioned why birds could perch on electric wires without being electrocuted. His curiosity led to the creation of a quiz program that explains scientific concepts through competition—what is now the NSMQ.

2. Originally Not Just for Students 🎓

While the NSMQ is now known as a high school competition, the original concept was much broader. The show was designed to educate the general public about the science behind everyday phenomena, beyond just the high school curriculum.

3. The Iconic NSMQ Tune Is Mozart’s Music 🎶

The familiar NSMQ theme song wasn’t originally composed for the show. It is actually “Voi Che Sapete”, a classical piece by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, written in the 18th century. The Italian lyrics translate to “You know what love is.”

4. Ghana’s Longest-Running TV Quiz Show 📺

NSMQ holds the record as Ghana’s longest-running, independently-produced television quiz show. Since its launch in 1993, it has remained a staple of academic excellence, growing in prestige each year.

5. The Trophy Has Changed Over the Years 🏆

The coveted NSMQ trophy has undergone multiple design changes over the years. Each new version represents the evolving prestige of the competition, making it one of the most sought-after prizes among Senior High School students.

6. The First-Ever Winners Were Prempeh College 🏅

In 1994, Prempeh College became the first-ever champions of the NSMQ. Their victory marked the beginning of the intense inter-school rivalries that continue to dominate the competition today.

7. A Historic Expansion in 2024 📈

The 2024 edition of the NSMQ made history by featuring a record-breaking 157 schools, the highest number of participants in the competition’s history. This expansion further cemented the NSMQ’s status as Ghana’s premier academic contest.

8. NSMQ’s Impact Beyond Academics 🏫

The competition has had a lasting impact on schools across Ghana, driving infrastructure development. Many NSMQ alumni have gone on to fund state-of-the-art science laboratories in their former schools, improving their alma mater’s chances of future victories.

9. Only Eleven Schools Have Ever Won the Championship 🏅

Since the competition began in 1993, only 11 schools have claimed the prestigious NSMQ National Championship, making the title one of the most exclusive academic honors in Ghana.

10. NSMQ Champions Inspire the Next Generation 🌍

Many past NSMQ winners have gone on to become top scientists, engineers, and leaders in Ghana and beyond. The competition continues to serve as a launchpad for brilliance, inspiring young students to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

What’s Next for NSMQ?

This year’s edition of the NSMQ promises to be the most thrilling yet—with more intense battles, unexpected twists, and jaw-dropping moments. As schools clash for academic supremacy, one thing is certain: the NSMQ is more than just a quiz—it’s a legacy!

Stay tuned for all the action, surprises, and excitement of Ghana’s biggest quiz show! 🔥✨
