The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the provisional results for the 2025 WASSCE School Candidates, and while stakeholders might appreciate having the results out early, the statistics paint a far more troubling picture of Ghana’s educational performance this year.
Despite a slight increase in total candidates (461,736 students from 1,021 schools), the quality of performance in the core subjects—the very foundation of tertiary education qualification—has dipped in shocking ways. A careful look at the numbers shows that 2025 might go down as one of the most disappointing WASSCE years in recent history, especially in Core Mathematics.

WASSCE 2025 Statistics (Failure Numbers)

That means over 131k candidates could not secure the minimum grade required for tertiary admission.
This is alarming because English is not just a subject but the medium of instruction for all academic disciplines. A failure rate this high suggests deeper issues in literacy development and classroom delivery nationwide.
Core Mathematics – The Worst Performance In Four Years
Core Mathematics experienced the biggest collapse in performance, dropping to 48.73% pass rate—a massive decline from:
- 2024: 66.86%
- 2023: 62.23%
- 2022: 61.39%
This is not a dip—it is a crash.
WAEC’s raw grade table shows:
- 52,145 candidates had E8
- 114,872 candidates had F9
Together with D7, the total number of failures rises to over 220,000 candidates—more than half of all students.
This level of failure in Core Math has serious long-term implications: reduced STEM enrolment, weakened technical education intake, and thousands of students automatically disqualified from most competitive university programs.
Integrated Science – Almost 40% Failure Rate
Integrated Science recorded a pass rate of 57.74%, still lower than 2023’s 66.82% and close to last year’s 58.77%. But the real concern lies in the failure numbers:

- 61,243 students scored F9
That’s over 161,000 candidates failing, showing that the science foundation in Ghanaian schools is nowhere near where it should be. For a country pushing for STEM transformation, these numbers highlight structural problems in teaching, resources, and student preparedness.
Social Studies – The Silent Disaster
Social Studies, a subject usually considered “easier,” shocked everyone this year.
Though 55.82% passed with A1–C6, the failure rate is disturbingly high:
- 40,608 students had E8
- 122,449 students had F9
This brings total failures to 196,727 candidates—the second-worst after Core Math.
Such a massive collapse in a typically high-scoring subject hints that the issue might not only be academic weakness but possible problems with exam preparation and comprehension.
Examination Irregularities – A Year Of More Trouble
Aside from the poor performance, the 2025 exams also recorded significant cases of malpractice:
- 6,295 candidates had subject results cancelled for bringing foreign materials.
- 653 candidates had entire results cancelled for possession of mobile phones.
- 908 subject results withheld for various offenses.
- 158 candidates had their entire results withheld.
- Results from 185 schools were withheld for suspected collusion.
- 35 persons, including 19 teachers, were implicated in misconduct, with many already convicted.
This means not only were performance levels low, but the integrity of the exam itself came under serious attack.
Four-Year Performance Trend – A Worrying Decline
Looking at WAEC’s 4-year trend table (2022–2025), only English Language remained somewhat stable. The other core subjects have clearly deteriorated, especially in 2025:
