The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially announced a mid-term break for all public basic schools across the country as part of the 2026 academic calendar.
According to the latest notice from GES, pupils in public basic schools will enjoy a two-day mid-term break from Monday, June 8, 2026, to Tuesday, June 9, 2026. The break forms part of measures outlined in the approved school calendar to provide learners and teachers with a short period of rest before academic activities resume.

The brief vacation is expected to allow both learners and teachers to recharge before continuing with the remainder of the academic term.
Educational stakeholders have often emphasized the importance of scheduled breaks in improving student concentration, reducing academic fatigue, and supporting overall well-being.

Importance of the Mid-Term Break
The mid-term break serves several important purposes within Ghana’s educational system. These include:
1. Improved Student Well-Being
Continuous classroom activities can be demanding for learners. A short break allows pupils to rest mentally and physically.
2. Enhanced Academic Performance
Studies have shown that periodic breaks can help improve concentration levels, learning retention, and classroom participation.
3. Teacher Preparation
Teachers also benefit from the break by using the period to review lesson plans, assess learners’ progress, and prepare for upcoming academic activities.
4. Family Engagement
The break provides parents and guardians with additional time to engage with their children and monitor their academic development.
What Parents and Guardians Should Know
GES is encouraging parents and guardians to ensure that students:
- Remain safe during the break period.
- Engage in productive educational activities at home.
- Complete any assignments provided by teachers.
- Return to school promptly when classes resume.
Parents are also advised to monitor their children’s activities and support learning even outside the classroom environment.
GES Commitment to Quality Education
The Ghana Education Service continues to implement structured academic calendars designed to balance effective teaching and learning with adequate rest periods for both learners and educators.
The inclusion of a mid-term break reflects GES’s commitment to promoting a healthy learning environment while maintaining academic excellence in public basic schools across Ghana.
Conclusion
The Ghana Education Service has officially scheduled a mid-term break from June 8 to June 9, 2026, for all public basic schools in Ghana. Students and teachers are expected to take advantage of the short recess before returning to continue academic work on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.
Parents, guardians, teachers, and learners are encouraged to take note of the dates and make the necessary arrangements ahead of the break.
