The National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), a prestigious academic competition in Ghana, is about to receive a significant upgrade in 2024 thanks to a generous donation from the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The NSMQ, organized by Primetime Limited, is an annual event that celebrates the brilliance of young minds in science and mathematics.
Nana Akua Aboagyewaa Mensa-Bonsu, the Managing Director of Primetime Limited, unveiled this exciting development at the grand finale of the 2023 NSMQ tournament. She expressed her gratitude to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his support of the program and his generous contribution to the competition.
“We would be remiss of us not to say thank you also to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, for his support of the programme, having received us on three different occasions, warmly welcoming us to Kumasi on the occasions that we’ve been there, and even donating a cup to the program starting next year. So next year there would be a more prestigious cup to fight for,” she indicated.
The new trophy promises to bring a fresh and exciting dimension to the NSMQ competition in 2024. As the competition continues to grow in prominence, the addition of this new trophy signifies a significant milestone and further elevates the prestige associated with winning the NSMQ.
In recent years, the NSMQ has seen remarkable winners and competitors. St. Peter’s Senior High School, for instance, clinched their third title five years ago and retained the trophy, following the rules of the competition. This led to the introduction of the current bronze trophy.
During this five-year period, other schools have also made their mark. Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (Presec Legon) has secured victory in the tournament on three occasions (2020, 2022, and 2023), highlighting their intellectual prowess. St. Augustine’s College and Prempeh College also earned their place in the winner’s circle in 2019 and 2021, respectively.
As the countdown begins for NSMQ 2024, the anticipation is building, and the new trophy from the Asantehene is sure to add an extra layer of excitement and prestige to the competition. We cannot wait to see which school will be the first to lift this magnificent trophy and etch their name into NSMQ history.
The NSMQ has always been a platform for nurturing young scientific and mathematical talent, and with the introduction of this new trophy, it has poised to reach even greater heights in the coming year.
