In the aftermath of the BECE & WASSCE, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued a stern caution to the public and students against falling victim to result upgrade scams.
In a recent post sighted by GESHub.org, WAEC highlighted its concern over the activities of unscrupulous individuals who falsely claim to have access to the council’s database, asserting their capability to manipulate the results of prospective students.
The post quoted the WAEC management, stating, “The management of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) wishes to alert its public to the activities of certain persons who introduce themselves as workers of WAEC and also claim to have access to its results database.”
These fraudsters typically contact prospective candidates, luring them with promises of result upgrades in exchange for a fee payable through mobile money transfers. WAEC strongly urged the public and students to refrain from engaging in such transactions.
According to WAEC, they have collaborated with security agencies to apprehend these fraudsters who exploit students during the release of WAEC results.
The WAEC in a document available to GESHub stated, “We will urge members of the public to report the activities of these fraudsters to the police or the nearest WAEC Office. There is nothing like result upgrade, and any person found culpable will be dealt with accordingly.”
The non-profit organization emphasized that WAEC’s results database is securely protected with military-grade encryption. Consequently, any forged WAEC examination results can be easily detected through their state-of-the-art confirmation/verification system.
Institutions and organizations were advised to verify or confirm results directly from the Council or utilize the online confirmation/verification service at waecgh.org.
To dispel any doubts, WAEC reiterated that students, stakeholders, and the general public should check this year’s BECE and West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results only at the official results checking portal of WAEC.
WAEC remains vigilant against fraudulent activities and urges everyone involved to prioritize authenticity and report any suspicious behavior promptly. The council reassures the public of the robust security measures in place to maintain the integrity of examination results.
