With the incoming government set to take office on January 7, 2025, a cloud of uncertainty hangs over the fate of graduate applicants eagerly waiting for their postings under the Ghana Education Service (GES). Recent statements from the President-Elect’s Transition Team have sparked widespread anxiety among applicants, as the team warns of potential reversals of last-minute recruitments initiated by the outgoing administration.

The Transition Team of the President-Elect, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, has raised concerns over what it describes as “last-minute recruitments, payments, and promotions” by the outgoing government.

In a press statement dated December 17, 2024, the team emphasized that any actions carried out without proper consultation with the joint Transition Team could face scrutiny and reversal once the new administration assumes office. The statement added that public officials who facilitate such decisions could be held accountable.

This announcement has left thousands of graduate applicants—many still holding the infamous ‘Pending for Consideration’ status—wondering if their long-awaited appointments might be revoked or further delayed. For some, particularly those who received their appointment letters during this transition period, the question looms large: Are their postings safe?

The Growing Anxiety Among Applicants

For months, graduate applicants have faced frustration over the 2024 GES recruitment process. Delays, unexplained statuses, and perceived favoritism have fueled growing tensions. Now, with the Transition Team’s stern position, some applicants fear that their efforts to secure postings could be undone altogether.

A key section of the statement reads:
“All these payments, recruitments, transfers, and promotions, some of which have been backdated, will be reversed and, where necessary, public officials responsible for them will be held to strict account.”

This explicit warning raises legitimate concerns. Applicants are left wondering if their recruitment process will be treated as part of the “last-minute” activities targeted for review. Given the political sensitivities of the current transition, the possibility of mass reversals remains a real fear.

What This Could Mean for Applicants

If the incoming government proceeds with reversing recruitments, applicants could find themselves back at square one. The painstaking journey of applying, waiting, and hoping could be nullified in a matter of days after January 7. For those with ‘Pending for Consideration’ statuses, this development adds yet another layer of uncertainty to an already complex process.

While the Transition Team maintains that accountability is key to ensuring fairness and transparency, graduates believe they are caught in the crossfire of political transitions. “Why should we suffer because of politics?” questioned one applicant on social media. Others have already called on President-Elect Mahama to consider their plight and prioritize their postings once sworn into office.

What Lies Ahead

It remains unclear how far the incoming administration will go in reversing the actions of the outgoing government. Historically, transitions of power in Ghana have often been marked by reviews of last-minute decisions, but the current situation feels especially sensitive given the scale of graduate unemployment and the frustrations of applicants who have been waiting for months.

For now, applicants can only hope that their postings will be treated with fairness and that the incoming government will recognize the critical role of teachers in nation-building. Calls are growing for President-Elect Mahama to provide clarity and reassurance to graduates once he assumes office.

The Countdown to January 7

As the clock ticks towards January 7, all eyes remain on the incoming government’s next move. Will it reverse appointments already issued? Will it scrap pending recruitments altogether? Or will there be a solution that prioritizes the welfare of graduates and ensures a transparent process?

For the thousands of applicants still in limbo, the answer to these questions could shape their futures. For now, the recruitment exercise hangs in the balance, with January 7 shaping up to be a critical moment in determining their fate.

There is no way that JM can reject the appointment letters which are pending for consideration on the GES module.lt is unconstitutional. He promised to reduce unemployment.
