In a heartwarming turn of events, Benjamin Darko, a remarkable graduate of a secondary school, whose outstanding results in the 2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) caught the attention of the online community, has been awarded a full educational scholarship.
The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has stepped forward to offer him an opportunity to pursue Chemical Engineering at the prestigious Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (KNUST).
This scholarship represents a beacon of hope for Darko, who has persevered against financial constraints to chase his dreams.
During a meeting with Benjamin Darko and his family at the office of the Vice Chancellor of KNUST, the Executive Director of the GNPC Foundation, Dr. Dominic Eduah, made the joyous announcement.
The Education & Training unit of the Foundation recognized Darko’s potential and the hurdles he faced, and they have extended their support to restore his hopes. Through collaboration with educational partners, the GNPC Foundation has taken the necessary steps to facilitate Darko’s successful admission in the upcoming enrolment window at KNUST.
Despite achieving an impressive academic record with 5A’s and 3B’s, the talented 21-year-old former Science student at Presbyterian Senior Secondary School (PRESEC) – Legon, had faced financial obstacles that hindered his ambition to pursue a Medical-Science related course at the university.
Undeterred by the lack of support, Darko took on multiple menial jobs since 2021, determined to save enough funds to continue his education.
Currently working as a fuel attendant at a GOIL station in Kumasi, his inspiring journey gained national attention after a GHOne news report highlighted his story, which soon went viral on social media platforms.
With the prospect of finally getting his education back on track, Benjamin Darko expressed his gratitude to the GNPC for their invaluable contribution towards supporting his future.
