In a tragic turn of events, students of Simms Senior High School, located in the Kwabre East municipality of the Ashanti Region, found themselves displaced as a fierce fire swept through their boys’ dormitory block.
Although the incident occurred on a seemingly ordinary Friday, October 13, around 11 a.m., the quick response of the fire service personnel prevented any casualties, but the aftermath left a heartbreaking scene.
As the clock struck 11 a.m. and students were diligently attending their classes, disaster struck. A devastating fire engulfed the boys’ dormitory block, which comprised four rooms on the top floor, each accommodating 42 students. The blaze swiftly devoured everything in its path, leaving behind a trail of destruction and despair.
The Ashanti Regional Fire Service personnel were quick to respond to the distress call, arriving at the scene in less than five minutes. However, the fire had already made significant headway by then.
According to DO3 Peter Addai, the Ashanti Regional Fire PRO, the rapid spread of the fire was primarily due to the presence of highly flammable materials such as mattresses and books in the rooms.
Despite the challenges, the dedicated firefighters worked tirelessly to prevent the flames from spreading to the nearby areas.
While the fire service managed to save one room on the top floor and the other four rooms on the ground floor, the damage had already been done. As a result, the students affected by the fire found themselves displaced, with their belongings and personal possessions reduced to ashes.
For now, they will have to rely on the support of their friends in the unaffected dormitory while the school authorities contemplate the next course of action.
In the wake of this distressing incident, the Mampongteng Fire Station has initiated an investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire. Determining the source of the blaze is crucial for preventing future incidents and ensuring the safety and security of the school’s students and staff.
