The National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) is an annual competition that highlights the brilliance and knowledge of high school students in Ghana. The 2022 edition of the quiz was filled with excitement, intense competition, and heartwarming moments.

The Champions
The coveted NSMQ trophy, and a cash prize of seventy thousand Ghana cedis, found its way to Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School, Legon. This exceptional prize package was divided into 30,000 cedis for the school, 20,000 for the contestants, and 20,000 for the teachers.
First Runner-Up
The first runner-up school, Prempeh College, received a total package of 50,000 cedis, with 20,000 going to the school, 15,000 to the team of contestants, and 15,000 to the teachers.
Kwaku Mensa-Bonsu Award for the Most Impressive Run
This special award, initiated in 2018, aims to recognize the “less-endowed school” that makes a significant impact in the competition. The deserving recipients were the contestants of Assin State College, who received a cash prize of GH₵7,000. They started their journey from the Regional Qualifiers and nearly defeated Adisadel College in the Quarter-finals.
Jacob and Elizabeth Banful Memorial Award
In memory of their parents who were teachers, the Banful Family established this award. It was presented to the teachers of Assin State College, who demonstrated outstanding dedication. The prize included a cash award of GH₵10,000.
Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu Award for the Most Outstanding Female Contestant
Ms. Afua Yedzene Emenyo Doe-Kiinnii of Mawuli School stood out as the most outstanding female contestant, earning her a cash prize of GH₵5,000. The award was presented by Ms. Nana Akua Mensa-Bonsu on behalf of Her Lordship Prof. Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu, Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana.
Marian Ewurama Addy Award for the Best Team
Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School clinched this award, which was established by Mr. Bubune Adih, the NSMQ 1999 Champion from Mfantsipim School, in 2015. They received a cash prize of GH₵5,000.
Newmont Ghana Golden Journey Award
Abetifi Presbyterian SHS earned the Newmont Ghana Golden Journey Award, recognizing their remarkable journey through the competition. Their impressive run included victories over several schools and culminated in a Quarter-final appearance. For this achievement, they received a cash prize of GH₵20,000.
Dano Inner Strength Award
Assin State College displayed incredible courage and resilience to reach the Quarter-finals, earning them the Dano Inner Strength Award. As a reward, the school received GH₵5,000 worth of Dano Milk products.
Educational Experience at Zipline Academy
Contestants from Assin State College won a unique four-week educational experience at Zipline Academy, where they received practical training on all of Zipline’s operations.
Goil Prize for the Most Decent and Exciting Cheering School
Adisadel College’s enthusiastic “jama” songs at the Grand Finale earned them the Goil Prize, which included fuel worth GH₵2,000.00.
AirtelTigo Prize for the Best Performing Lesser-Known School
Abetifi Presbyterian SHS was the proud recipient of the AirtelTigo Prize. This award included an AirtelTigo Business Router with FlexiNet Data for five months, along with AirtelTigo MiFis with 10GB data for each contestant.
Scholarships
The NSMQ 2022 journey concluded with scholarships awarded to deserving students from participating schools.
One notable scholarship was the Academic City University College Presidential Scholarship, initially offered to Austin Afutu of Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School but later accepted by Benjamin Eyram Degbey of St. James Seminary SHS. This prestigious scholarship, valued at $40,000, covers tuition, accommodation, feeding, a laptop, and a monthly stipend.
The NSMQ 2022 was not only a celebration of academic excellence but also, proof to the determination and talent of students from various schools across Ghana. It is heartening to see these young minds shine and be rewarded for their hard work and dedication.
