The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, on Friday, April 11, 2025, officially inaugurated a new Board of Trustees for the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund). The inauguration ceremony was held at the Fund’s headquarters in East Legon, Accra.
The newly constituted 17-member Board brings together a diverse mix of expertise and institutional representation, signaling a robust approach to education funding and policy implementation. The Board includes representatives from key institutions such as the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Finance, Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT).
Other sectors represented include the Ghana Bankers Association, Ghana Insurers Association, National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA), Christian Council, Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), and the Ghana Employers Association. This inclusive structure is expected to enhance collaboration and foster effective decision-making in line with national education priorities.
During his address, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu emphasized the pivotal role of GETFund in Ghana’s educational development, particularly in areas such as infrastructure enhancement, scholarship provision, and the supply of teaching and learning materials. He highlighted the statutory importance of the Board, stating that no expenditure from the Fund can be undertaken without the Board’s approval.
The Minister also reiterated the government’s commitment to leveraging GETFund as a key financial support mechanism for the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme. According to him, the Fund will play a central role in ensuring the programme’s sustainability, efficiency, and long-term success.
Encouraging the Board to adopt a strategic and collaborative approach, Hon. Iddrisu urged members to actively engage with stakeholders such as the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), private sector entities, and international development organizations. These partnerships, he noted, are essential for expanding the Fund’s resource base and ensuring impactful investments across all levels of education.
He further assured the Board of the Ministry’s full support in terms of policy direction and institutional cooperation, calling on the members to serve with “integrity, service, and patriotism.”
The new GETFund Board is expected to spearhead key interventions aimed at addressing infrastructure gaps, enhancing equitable access to tertiary education, and promoting research and innovation through transparent and sustained funding mechanisms.
With this inauguration, the Ministry of Education reinforces its commitment to transforming Ghana’s educational sector and ensuring that funding remains aligned with the country’s development aspirations.
