In response to recent reports circulating in the media regarding alleged food shortages in senior high schools (SHSs) across the nation, the Ministry of Education (MoE) has stepped forward to address the concerns raised. The Ministry’s reaction comes amidst anticipation for an upcoming documentary by JoyNews titled ‘Empty Plates’, which purportedly sheds light on acute food scarcity within SHSs, particularly in regions such as Northern, Ashanti, and Oti.
In a press release signed by the Public Relations Officer (PRO), Kwesi Kwarteng, the Ministry debunked claims of food shortage, asserting that students are adequately fed and content with both the quality and quantity of meals provided. The statement emphasizes that the Ministry conducted a thorough monitoring exercise to ascertain the validity of the issues raised and ensure appropriate action if necessary.
According to the Ministry’s findings from tours conducted in various SHSs, there is no evidence of food shortage recorded. The statement highlights the maintenance of sufficient food stocks in school storage facilities and the prompt disbursement of funds allocated for the purchase of perishable food items. Moreover, feedback from school administrators and students indicates overall satisfaction with the meals served.
Despite these findings, the Ministry remains open to addressing any reported instances of food shortages in schools. It reassures parents, students, and the public of its unwavering commitment to providing adequate, high-quality, and timely food supplies, thereby enhancing the free and quality Senior High School program.
