In a recent development that is set to impact government employees across Ghana, the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) has issued a significant directive, marking a crucial turning point in the integration of the National Identification Authority’s (NIA) Ghana Card into the country’s payroll system.
The pivotal decision unfolded during a meeting held on October 11, where discussions between CAGD and NIA centered around a special registration exercise for individuals yet to acquire the Ghana Card. However, it seems there was a miscommunication, as CAGD later sought consent and agreement on proposed timelines from NIA.
In response, the NIA clarified that a special registration exercise was not feasible, as they had already opened offices nationwide for general registration on September 4. This included a focus on targeted public sector employees on the government payroll.
In light of this, CAGD has issued a critical advisory to its staff and members, urging them to promptly register for their Ghana Cards at any of the 292 NIA offices nationwide. Government employees have been emphasized as a priority, and CAGD has taken a firm stance on compliance.
Starting February 2024, government employees on the centralized payroll without NIA numbers will no longer receive their salaries. This bold move underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that all its employees are duly registered and possess the necessary identification.
The communication, dated December 14, stresses the urgency of prompt action. It highlights that all new entrants are required to have the NIA Number, and biometric data capture post-recruitment now relies on information extracted from their Ghana Card details.
The advisory serves as a timely reminder for those yet to register, especially during the December-January period. Government employees are urged to take advantage of the ongoing registration process to obtain their Ghana Cards. This is crucial to ensure seamless salary payments and compliance with the new directive.
