Stephen Koomson, an exceptional yet financially challenged graduate of Senior High School (SHS), has been granted a full scholarship by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) to pursue a law degree at the University of Ghana (Legon). This generous opportunity comes in response to reports that emerged about Koomson resorting to illegal mining activities to make ends meet.
At the age of 21, Stephen Koomson, a former student of Mpohor SHS, achieved remarkable success in the 2021 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), attaining 5As and 3Bs across various subjects. Unfortunately, due to his parents’ inability to provide the necessary financial support, he faced obstacles in continuing his education.
Fortunately, a few days ago, a news story shed light on Koomson’s involvement in illegal mining, commonly known as galamse. The accompanying images depicted him covered in dirt as a consequence of his hazardous mining activities. The story garnered significant attention from the Ghanaian public, who fervently appealed to kind-hearted individuals and organizations to assist him. Thankfully, the GNPC has stepped forward to secure the young man’s future.
“We are immediately enrolling him in the GNPC scholarship program to reignite his aspirations of becoming a lawyer. We are equally thrilled to provide him with an opportunity that aligns with our Education & Training principles,” stated Dr. Dominic Eduah, the Executive Director of the GNPC Foundation.
Expressing immense gratitude, Koomson extended his appreciation to the GNPC and pledged to dedicate himself to diligent studies, making the most of this life-changing opportunity.
