In the heart of the Bono Region, examiners are grappling with frustration and discontent over prolonged delays in receiving compensation for their dedicated efforts in marking the 2023 West African Examinations Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Despite successfully fulfilling their duties and the subsequent release of results, these educators find themselves in limbo, anxiously awaiting the remuneration they rightfully deserve.

Expressing their discontent, the examiners emphasize that this delay in payment has become an unfortunate annual occurrence. The situation has become so dire that they are now rallying for a change in the current system that perpetuates these delays.

Even with the release of results by WAEC in 2023, the examiners lament that they are still left waiting for their rightful compensation.

One examiner, reflecting on years of service, states, “I started marking in 2010, and everything was okay until recent times; the payments are not forthcoming. We have to wait for so many weeks or even months before we are paid. That is my concern, that is what we are going through now as examiners.”

Another adds, “In fact, I’m even fed up to tell you the truth, I’m getting fed up because this is not the first time they are doing this. They have been delaying our payments for about two years now.”

The examiners express a sense of helplessness, citing a lack of representation or support in their cause. When reaching out to WAEC for answers, they are met with explanations that the government has not released the necessary funds. This absence of an advocate leaves them feeling unsupported and undervalued.

Highlighting the challenges faced during the marking process, one examiner shares, “WAEC pressures examiners, in which we have to work overnight. The employer-employee relationship is not going well. They should have even alerted us if there are any distortions, but they don’t do that, and this has become a problem now.”

While authorities at the WAEC office in Sunyani declined to provide on-camera statements, they did acknowledge the outstanding payments owed to the examiners.

The officials assured the examiners that they would receive their remuneration once the government releases the necessary funds.

As stakeholders await the government’s release of funds, the hope is that these dedicated professionals will soon receive the recognition and compensation they rightfully deserve.
