In the world of academic competitions, the National Science and Maths Quiz stands out as one of the premier events for Senior High School students in Ghana. This year, there is an exciting twist in the tale as three exceptional schools have been granted a unique opportunity.
The schools are;
- Tamale Islamic Science SHS
- Anglican SHS from Kumasi
- Ghana Secondary Technical School
These three schools have all been elevated to the prestigious one-eighth stage of the competition, thanks to their remarkable victories in their respective regional and zonal championships.
Under normal circumstances, these schools would have begun their journey in the preliminary stage, which will take place between October 6th and 9th, 2023.
However, their exceptional performances have earned them a special spot in the one-eighth stage, taking place from October 11th to 13th, 2023.
Tamale Islamic Science SHS
Tamale Islamic Science SHS secured their spot in the one-eighth stage by winning the Northern Zonal Championship. They faced fierce competition from schools like Tamale SHS, St. Xavier Junior Seminary, and Ghana SHTS, Tamale.
In a thrilling final round of the competition, Tamale Islamic Science SHS emerged victorious with a final score of 30 points. Tamale SHS followed closely with 26 points, and St. Francis Xavier Junior Seminary claimed the third position with 21 points. Ghana SHS, Tamale, showed dedication throughout the competition and concluded with 10 points.
Anglican SHS, Kumasi
Anglican SHS, Kumasi, achieved their remarkable feat by winning the Ashanti Regional Championship. Their journey included formidable opponents such as Prempeh College and Simms SHS.
In an intense battle that went down to the wire, Prempeh College emerged as the champions with 32 points, while Anglican SHS, Kumasi, secured the second position with 26 points. Simms SHS claimed the third position with 17 points.
Ghana Secondary Technical School
Ghana Secondary Technical School demonstrated their excellence by clinching the title of Western Zonal Champion. They faced stiff competition from schools like Fijai SHS and Archbishop Porter Girls’ SHS.
In the final and deciding round, Ghana Secondary Technical School remained strong, securing an additional 3 points and bringing their final score to an impressive 34 points. Fijai SHS displayed commendable effort with 28 points, while Archbishop Porter Girls’ SHS secured 21 points.
What is truly remarkable about these schools starting their journey at the one-eighth stage is that they will essentially become seeded schools by winning their first contest. This presents an exciting opportunity for them to further display their talent and knowledge in the 2024 NSMQ National Championship competition.

Note: There are twenty-seven seeded schools from last year’s NSMQ National Championship that are waiting to be paired with any of the above-listed schools, should they perform well in the next round of the competition.
A Seeded School in the NSMQ is simply a school that makes it from the preliminary stages of the competition to the one-eighth and to the quarter-finals.
What this implies is that, all the various schools that win their one-eighth stage contest automatically qualify as a seeded school for the next year.
The relieving thing about being a seeded school in the NSMQ is that, as other schools battle their way from the various regional championship competition, the seeded schools just await them in the National championship.
