The Ghana SHS Admission Portal 2026 provides BECE candidates with a digital process for accessing Senior High School admission services. One of the key stages in this process is obtaining an admission voucher, which serves as the access key for completing the online admission form.
According to the portal documentation, candidates can buy or retrieve an admission voucher through USSD and mobile money, making it possible to obtain the voucher through a mobile-based process.
This guide explains how the admission voucher purchase process works, what the voucher is used for, and what candidates should know before attempting to redeem it.
What Is the Ghana SHS Admission Voucher?
The Ghana SHS admission voucher is a one-time-use access key that unlocks the admission form for a specific candidate.
The platform documentation describes the voucher in relation to the candidate’s index number and coupon code. Voucher records can have different statuses, including unused, used and, where applicable, expired.
The voucher is therefore an important part of the transition from placement checking to online admission-form completion.
Who Needs the SHS Admission Voucher?
The voucher is intended for BECE candidates who are proceeding with the online Senior High School admission process.
The documented student journey follows this sequence:
Check Placement → See Assigned School and Programme → Redeem Voucher → Admission Record Created
The portal identifies BECE candidates using their index number and examination year, while the voucher provides access to the admission form.
How to Buy the Ghana SHS Admission Voucher in 2026
The portal documentation identifies USSD and mobile money as a method for buying or retrieving an admission voucher.
The documented process consists of the following stages:
Step 1: Dial the Designated USSD Short Code
The candidate begins by dialling the designated USSD short code for the voucher service.
The portal documentation identifies this as the first stage of the voucher-purchase process.
Step 2: Select “Buy / Retrieve Coupon”
After accessing the USSD menu, the candidate selects the option labelled Buy / Retrieve Coupon.
This option is used to initiate the voucher purchase or retrieval process.
Step 3: Make the Payment
The candidate then proceeds with the required mobile-money charge or online payment.
The system documentation specifically identifies mobile-money payment and online payment as part of the voucher-purchase workflow.
Step 4: Wait for Payment Confirmation
After payment has been made, the transaction goes through a payment confirmation stage.
Candidates should ensure that the payment process has been completed successfully before expecting the voucher code to be generated.
Step 5: Receive the Voucher Code
Following successful payment confirmation, the system generates an SMS-safe voucher code.
The documentation identifies the voucher code as the information that is generated after the payment process.
The code can then be used in the admission process to unlock the relevant admission form.
Ghana SHS Admission Voucher Purchase Process
The complete documented process can be summarized as:
Dial USSD Short Code → Select Buy / Retrieve Coupon → Make Mobile-Money or Online Payment → Receive Payment Confirmation → Generate SMS-Safe Voucher Code
This provides candidates with a mobile-based route to obtain the admission voucher needed for the next stage of the online admission process.
What Happens After Buying the Admission Voucher?
Buying the voucher does not itself complete the admission process.
After obtaining the voucher, the candidate must redeem the voucher through the admission portal.
The documented student journey shows that the candidate first looks up the placement, views the assigned school and programme, and then redeems the voucher. Once the voucher is successfully redeemed, an admission record is created.
The admission process then continues with the online admission form.
How Is the Voucher Redeemed?
The portal documentation identifies the voucher as an access key that unlocks the admission form for a specific candidate.
The voucher is associated with the candidate’s index number and coupon code, and the documented student journey refers to an 8-character voucher code.
After successful redemption, the candidate can proceed with the admission form.
When Should a Candidate Buy the Admission Voucher?
The documented workflow places voucher redemption after placement lookup.
A candidate first checks the placement and sees the assigned Senior High School and programme before proceeding to voucher redemption.
Therefore, candidates should confirm their placement before proceeding with the voucher stage of the admission process.
Can a Valid Voucher Be Used Anytime?
No.
The portal documentation states that the school’s admission window still applies.
Schools can set their own admission opening and closing dates. As a result, even a valid and unused voucher cannot be redeemed outside the school’s open admission dates.
This means candidates should pay attention to the admission period applicable to the school to which they have been placed.
How Long Is an SHS Admission Voucher Valid?
The supplied portal documentation identifies voucher statuses as:
- Unused
- Used
- Expired, where applicable
However, the documentation does not specify a universal number of days or a fixed validity period for every voucher.
Candidates should therefore not assume that a voucher can be used indefinitely. The school’s admission window remains an important condition for redemption.
What Is the Difference Between Buying and Redeeming the Voucher?
Buying and redeeming the voucher are two different stages.
Buying the Voucher
This involves obtaining the voucher through the documented USSD and mobile-money or online payment process.
Redeeming the Voucher
This involves entering or using the voucher within the admission portal to unlock the admission form for the candidate.
The system documentation describes the voucher as the access key that unlocks the admission form.
Therefore:
Buying = Obtaining the admission voucher
Redeeming = Using the voucher to access the admission form
What Should Candidates Do If Payment Is Successful but the Voucher Is Not Received?
The supplied portal documentation describes payment confirmation followed by generation of an SMS-safe voucher code.
However, it does not provide a detailed troubleshooting procedure for cases where payment is successful but the voucher code is not received.
Candidates experiencing such an issue should therefore use the appropriate official support or service channels rather than making another payment before confirming the status of the original transaction.
