The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of candidates who sat for the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). While there is excitement among candidates and parents across Ghana, it is important to note that not all candidates will qualify for placement under the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme.
According to the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) guidelines, certain categories of candidates will be excluded from placement, regardless of the schools they selected during registration. These candidates will not be admitted to any public senior high school in the 2025 academic year and may face at least a one-year delay before reapplying.
Categories of BECE Candidates Who Will Miss SHS Placement
1. Candidates with Cancelled Results
WAEC has the authority to cancel the results of candidates found guilty of examination malpractice. In such cases, “Cancelled” will appear against the affected subjects or the entire results. Cancellation automatically disqualifies candidates from SHS placement under the Free SHS programme.
WAEC has confirmed that over 1,400 candidates were invited for post-examination investigations this year, with final decisions dependent on the outcomes of these reviews.
2. Candidates with Withheld Results
Some candidates may have their results withheld while WAEC conducts investigations. Until these investigations are completed, the results will not be released. If withheld results are not cleared before the placement period, such candidates will not be considered for SHS admission.
3. Candidates Who Scored Grade 9 in English Language or Mathematics
Even though the Ministry of Education has not officially announced a cut-off point, precedent shows that candidates who obtain Grade 9 in English Language or Mathematics—or both—will not be placed. These two subjects are considered essential for academic progression.
Such candidates will also be excluded from the self-placement system and will miss out on Free SHS in 2025.
4. Candidates Absent from Any Core Subject
Placement into senior high school is based on raw scores from the four core subjects—English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, and Social Studies—plus the best two elective subjects. Candidates who miss any of the core subjects will have incomplete data, making them ineligible for placement.
5. Candidates Who Fail to Enroll After Placement
Placement does not guarantee admission unless candidates complete their enrollment within the official registration period. Candidates who fail to report to their assigned schools on time will forfeit their placement. Once the deadline passes, such placements are considered void, and affected students will not benefit from Free SHS for the 2025 academic year.
