The management of Citi TV and Citi FM has announced a scholarship initiative aimed at supporting the academic dreams of the top three Senior High School students in the Torkpo community within the Shai Osudoku district of the Greater Accra Region. These scholarships will cover the students’ fees at any tertiary institution in the country.
The exciting news was revealed by the Managing Director of Citi TV/Citi FM, Samuel Attah-Mensah, during a groundbreaking event for their “OperationRebuild” initiative. This initiative is designed to build resettlement centers for individuals affected by the Akosombo dam spillage, a project with far-reaching impacts on the local community.
“I came with my boss [Nik Amarteifio],” Mr. Attah-Mensah explained, “He whispered something to me, and I think I should communicate it to you. He said that, upon seeing what is going on and how lives are at risk, he believes it will also impact education. We, as an institution, have an educational scholarship scheme known as COPE…
… so he has asked me to let you know that, next month when the 2023 WASSCE results are released, the top three students from this community will automatically receive scholarships from us to pursue their university education.”
The announcement was met with thunderous applause from the community members present, reflecting the appreciation and enthusiasm of the Torkpo community.
As part of the “OperationRebuild” initiative, the first resettlement center will be established at a school in Torkpo. Once the floodwaters recede, and it becomes safe for people to return to their homes, the center will be converted back into classrooms, ensuring that the community’s educational infrastructure is restored and safeguarded.
In total, three resettlement centers will be created, each in a dormitory-style building format capable of accommodating at least 200 people. These centers will also be equipped with essential facilities, including washrooms.
Mr. Attah-Mensah revealed that each center will cost GH¢200,000, and he expressed gratitude for the generous contributions made by several companies toward the successful completion of the initiative.
One of these notable contributions came from Ghana Petroleum Mooring Systems, which donated GH¢200,000 and GH¢30,000 worth of water towards the project. Tropical Cable and Conductor Limited pledged to provide all the cable needs of the resettlement centers, further demonstrating the collaborative effort to support the Torkpo community during these challenging times.
The Akosombo Dam spillage has left many communities in dire need of essential supplies, shelter, and clean water. Over 30,000 people have been displaced from their homes, making it an urgent imperative for organizations like Citi TV and Citi FM to step up and make a positive difference in the lives of those affected.
This initiative not only addresses immediate needs but also paves the way for the academic success of the community’s brightest young minds, creating a brighter future for Torkpo. Citi TV and Citi FM’s commitment to both education and community support is a testament to their dedication to making a real impact in the lives of the people they serve.
