In the past few day, a shocking incident at Adisadel College has sent shockwaves through the nation. A viral video captured a final-year student violently assaulting a fellow colleague in their dormitory.

The incident sparked outrage and raised questions about the safety and well-being of students within school premises. As the Ghanaian justice system seeks to address this distressing matter, it has encountered some obstacles, leading to an adjournment of the case until August 2, 2023, by the Cape Coast District Court 2.

The assault quickly gained national attention after the video went viral on social media platforms. The perpetrator, a 2023 WASSCE graduate, was arrested by the Ghana Police Service following a directive from the Attorney General to ensure his appearance in court on July 28, 2023.

The incident’s gravity prompted Africa Education Watch to step forward and condemn the assault. EduWatch, an influential education think tank, called on the Ghana Police Service to treat the matter as a criminal case and bring the responsible student to justice.

The Director of EduWatch, Mr. Kofi Asare, took to social media to express his condemnation of the bullying incident, emphasizing the need for swift action from the authorities.

As the case made its way to court for the first time, it encountered an unexpected setback. The Cape Coast District Court 2, responsible for the trial, lacked a full panel to hear the case, leading to the suspension of the criminal proceedings. Consequently, the court adjourned the matter until August 2, 2023.

Amidst the legal proceedings, the mother of the bullied student, Margaret Afari, made an emotional plea to the management of Adisadel College. Her son, the victim of the assault, faces an uncertain future regarding his education.

The school imposed interim sanctions, requiring him to stay off the premises during the WASSCE period and return daily with his parents to write his exams. Distraught by the situation, Margaret Afari appealed for leniency, requesting the authorities to reconsider the sanctions and allow her son to complete his examinations within the school’s supportive environment.
