In a bid to revolutionize education in Ghana, the Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has initiated the Communities of Excellence Programme (CEP), a visionary step towards fostering collaboration among all stakeholders to enhance the quality of education across the nation.

The essence of the CEP lies in cultivating a network of highly literate communities where no child is left behind, and every individual is empowered to contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic development of the country. Dr. Adutwum, during the launch held at Mamfe in the Akuapem South District, emphasized the important role of opinion leaders, chiefs, political figures, teachers, and other participants in shaping the educational journey of Ghanaian children.

Under the umbrella of the CEP, chiefs are designated to play a critical role in enhancing learning outcomes by providing accommodations and other forms of support to teachers and education providers. Moreover, the programme aims to ensure transparency and accountability by involving various stakeholders in scrutinizing and assessing students’ performance.

The overarching goal of the CEP is ambitious yet attainable – to ensure that 90 per cent of basic four pupils aged ten acquire foundational competencies in literacy and numeracy. Additionally, the programme seeks to facilitate the seamless transition of 90 per cent of Junior High School (JHS) students into Senior High School (SHS), and subsequently, 90 per cent of SHS students into tertiary education.

Nana Baffour Awuah, the Director of Pre-tertiary at the Ministry of Education, highlighted the program’s positive impact on 700 schools, 232 communities, and 40 districts nationwide. He urged communities to embrace a culture of cooperation, innovation, and continuous improvement to ensure the sustainability of the programme.

Echoing the sentiments of unity and collective effort, Nana Ansah Sasraku III, the Kyidomhene of the Akuapem Traditional Area and chief of Mamfe, called upon fellow chiefs across the country to actively engage in the implementation of the CEP. He emphasized that education must be a paramount concern for every traditional area, with chiefs playing a proactive role in its advancement.

Nana Sasraku also stressed the importance of prioritizing education for both genders, advocating for special attention to be given to the education of boys. Furthermore, he appealed to the government to address the issue of menstrual hygiene by providing free sanitary pads to girls in schools, recognizing the significant impact it has on their educational journey.

In the broader context, Ghana’s commitment to investing in education reflects its dedication to developing human capital and harnessing its demographic dividend. With nearly 40 per cent of its population under the age of 15, the country sees education as a strategic avenue to equip its youth with the necessary knowledge, skills, and values for future success.

The introduction of the CEP aligns with Ghana’s ambitious national education reforms, aimed at improving basic learning outcomes, ensuring equitable access to quality education, and enhancing overall educational attainment for its young population.

In essence, the launch of the Communities of Excellence Programme heralds a new era in Ghana’s educational landscape, signaling a collective effort towards fostering excellence, inclusivity, and empowerment within communities across the nation. Dr. Adutwum’s vision and leadership pave the way for a brighter future, where education serves as the cornerstone of progress and prosperity for generations to come.
