The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced a clear timeline for the recruitment of the 2023 batch of public Colleges of Education (CoE) graduates, assuring that all qualified trainees will be absorbed into the teaching workforce beginning next year.
Speaking on Power FM/TV XYZ, the GES Public Relations Officer, Daniel Fenyi, revealed that the Service has successfully resolved the administrative bottlenecks that previously hindered recruitment processes. With those challenges addressed, the GES is now prepared to initiate a structured recruitment plan for 2023 graduates within the 2025/2026 academic year.
Fenyi disclosed that the GES has identified a nationwide teacher deficit of about 78,000 vacancies, highlighting the urgent need for more educators in basic schools. However, he explained that the Ministry of Finance has indicated that current fiscal limitations make it impossible for government to employ the full number of teachers required.
“We have identified 78,000 vacant teaching positions across the country. But the Ministry of Finance has made it clear that government cannot financially support the recruitment of that full number at the moment,” he said.
Despite these constraints, he assured that recruitment of the 13,000 to 14,000 trained teachers who graduated in 2023 from public Colleges of Education will be prioritized. According to Fenyi, ongoing discussions are aimed at ensuring that all graduates who meet the standard requirements—successful national service completion and a pass in the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination—are absorbed into the Service starting next year.
He reiterated the GES’s commitment to placing every qualified 2023 graduate, describing the initiative as part of government’s efforts to strengthen staffing at the basic education level across the country.
With this update, 2023 CoE graduates can expect their recruitment and postings to begin next year, marking a significant step toward addressing teacher shortages nationwide.
