In a recent call to action, Kofi Asare, the Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, has urged the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take a firm stance against examination malpractices by publicly naming and shaming teachers involved in such unethical activities.

This comes in the wake of a disturbing revelation that over 58,300 subject results were canceled in the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) due to widespread cheating.

The issue of academic dishonesty has plagued the integrity of the WASSCE, with reports emerging that some Senior High School (SHS) students have been paying teachers for assistance in cheating. The extent of the problem is alarming, with significant numbers of results being invalidated and the future prospects of countless students being jeopardized.

Kofi Asare has highlighted the urgent need for transparency and accountability within the educational system. He believes that by publishing the names of the dismissed staff involved in these malpractices, GES can send a strong message that such behavior will not be tolerated and will be met with severe consequences.

“Our time will come,” Asare stated, indicating a sense of inevitable justice for those who exploit the education system for personal gain. He emphasized that exposing the culprits is not just about punishment, but also about restoring trust in the examination process and ensuring that hard-working, honest students are not disadvantaged by the actions of a few.

The call for GES to release the names of the implicated teachers is seen as an important step in addressing the issue head-on. It is hoped that this move will deter future misconduct and reinforce the values of integrity and fairness in the education sector.

As the debate continues, stakeholders in education and the wider community are watching closely to see how GES responds to this pressing demand. The future of many students and the credibility of the examination system depend on decisive and transparent action being taken.
