In a riveting finale held on February 3, the nation witnessed the crowning of a new spelling champion in The Spelling Bee – GH 2024. Out of ninety-nine spellers who showcased their linguistic prowess, Giovanni Adjei, speller number 41 and a pupil of Christ the King International School, emerged triumphant, clinching the coveted title.
Giovanni Adjei’s winning moment came with the spelling of the word G-U-I-J-O, propelling him to victory. As the deserving winner, Giovanni was awarded a prize package valued at over $10,000, which includes an all-expense-paid trip to represent Ghana at the prestigious 2024 Scripps Spelling Bee in the United States.
In addition to the grand prize, Giovanni Adjei received a 1-year subscription to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, $500 in spending money, GH₵1,000 worth of GOIL PLC fuel coupons, Indomie Ghana products, an engraved trophy, and a Gold medal.
The competition also celebrated the remarkable achievements of the runners-up. N’Adom Darko-Asare of DPS International Ghana, the 1st-runner-up, was awarded a GH₵5,000 cash prize, a fully installed Dstv Ghana HD Zapper decoder with 4-month compact viewing, Indomie Ghana products, GH₵500 GOIL PLC fuel coupons, and a silver medal. Abena Kwaffo from KNUST Basic School, the 2nd-runner-up, also received similar prizes along with a bronze medal.
The 2024 edition of The Spelling Bee Ghana was expertly hosted by Spelling Maestro Nathaniel Attoh, who infused the event with lyrical flair and excitement. Distinguished guests, including Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, and Member of Parliament for Ketu South, Hon Abla Dzifa Gomashie, graced the occasion with their presence. The event also welcomed esteemed personalities such as Mrs Patricia Obo-Nai, the first-ever Ghanaian female CEO of Vodafone Ghana, and Mrs Sylvia Inkoom, Managing Director of First National Bank.
The Spelling Bee is more than just a competition; it is a literacy program that instills valuable language skills and fosters a love for learning among primary children aged 7 to 13. Affiliated with the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the USA, The Spelling Bee Ghana has been a beacon of educational excellence since its inception in 2007. Maria Isabel Kubabom, the inaugural champion, made history as the first African representative at the Scripps Spelling Bee, setting a precedent for Ghana’s continued participation.
Organized by the Young Educators Foundation, The Spelling Bee Ghana embodies a commitment to youth empowerment and educational advancement. With a vision to improve the lives of young people through literacy, the foundation champions the cause of education, recognizing that learning extends beyond the confines of the classroom.
