In a bid to enhance the quality of education and better prepare students for national examinations, the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Education, has announced plans to introduce a National Standardized Test (NST) for students in basic schools. This initiative, revealed by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, aims to assess students’ proficiency in core subjects such as Mathematics and English Language, while also providing them with valuable examination experience ahead of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The announcement was made during a public forum on Monday, February 17, 2025, where the Minister outlined the government’s vision for improving educational outcomes and reducing the stress associated with national exams.
Key Details of the National Standardized Test (NST)
- Purpose of the NST:
The NST is designed to serve as a standardized assessment tool to measure students’ understanding of the curriculum and their readiness for the BECE. By introducing the test at various stages of basic education, the government aims to create a supportive environment where students can gradually build confidence and familiarity with examination settings. - Targeted Classes:
The NST will be administered to students in Primary 2 (P2), Primary 4 (P4), Primary 6 (P6), and Junior High School 2 (JHS 2). Minister’s Statement
During the forum, Minister Haruna Iddrisu emphasized the importance of the NST in preparing students for the challenges of national examinations. He stated:
“I am also happy to announce that a National Standardized Test will be introduced in Ghana for students in P2, P4, P6, and JSS2. The intention is simple; we don’t want to tell a child that the only time they are asked to write exams is to prepare for the BECE and get ready for BECE when the child has never gone through even the psychological environment of an examination room. Therefore, we intend to introduce the NST, a national standardized test which will help children prepare for the world of examinations.”
