Dzikunu Nelson Armstrong, a student hailing from Jireh International School in Ashaiman, has clinched victory in the highly coveted 2023 edition of Citi TV/Citi FM’s ‘The Literacy Challenge.’
This prestigious contest witnessed a changing of the guard, as Master Dzikunu dethroned Samuel Kwaku Gyamfi Gariba of D and D Academy in Kumasi, emerging as the new champion.
His triumph comes with a slew of exciting prizes, including GH¢10,000 in cash, an impressive trophy, six months’ worth of Webie Crunchy Biscuit supply, and a treasure trove of other rewards.
The 2023 edition of ‘The Literacy Challenge’ presented an intriguing challenge to the participating students. They were tasked with crafting a captivating story spanning a minimum of 600 words, culminating with the poignant statement: “The happiest people do not have the best of everything; they make the best of everything they have.”
The submission deadline was set for July 15, with entries accepted either at the front desk of Citi TV/Citi FM or through postal mail at P.O.BOX GP 14123, Accra Central.
Out of a substantial pool of over 1000 Junior High School students who submitted their essays before or on the July 15 deadline day, a select group of 50 students earned the privilege of being chosen as participants. These young talents underwent a mandatory Aptitude Test on August 12 at the Accra Digital Centre, which ultimately led to the selection of the final 10 contestants.
The competition unfolded over four intense rounds, with each round testing different aspects of the contestants’ abilities. In the initial round, participants were assessed on their knowledge of social studies, reasoning, and literature/language. Kotei Adel Alberta from the Ofaakor M/A Basic D JHS stood out in this round, amassing an impressive 34 points.
The second round proved to be the fiercest, focusing on the contestants’ numeracy skills. Three of the participants exhibited exceptional prowess, each scoring 11 points.
Moving on to the third round, the spotlight shifted to Science Concepts, where Mireku Patrick Oscar Manuel emerged as the top scorer, securing ten valuable points.
‘The Literacy Challenge,’ originally known as ‘The Write Away Contest,’ has been captivating audiences since its inception in 2017.
The competition reached its climax after the fourth round, resulting in an unexpected tie between Kotei Adel Alberta and Adiel Akosua Agyaka Safo, both amassing 65 points, leaving the audience on the edge of their seats.
In the end, it was Dzikunu Nelson Armstrong who prevailed, capturing the hearts and minds of the judges and audience alike with his literary prowess and storytelling finesse. His resounding victory will undoubtedly serve as an inspiration to young wordsmiths and scholars across the nation, reaffirming the adage that “the happiest people do not have the best of everything; they make the best of everything they have.”
