Teachers play a vital role in shaping the future of our society by imparting knowledge and skills to the next generation. To ensure their well-being and work-life balance, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has established a comprehensive framework of leave entitlements for teachers.

This post explores the various types of leave available to teachers under the agreement between teacher unions, the GES, and the Ministry of Education, as of 2020.

Leave Entitlements for Teachers within the GES

  1. Terminal Leave
  2. Leave for Examination

Terminal Leave: Terminal leave is granted to teachers at the end of their service. It allows them to prepare for retirement and transition smoothly to the next phase of their lives.

Leave for Examination: Teachers are entitled to leave when they are taking examinations to further their education. This encourages continuous learning and professional development.

Causal Leave/Emergency Leave: In cases of unexpected emergencies or unforeseen circumstances, teachers can take casual or emergency leave to address personal matters that require immediate attention.

Study Leaves: Study leaves are provided to teachers who wish to pursue advanced studies or attend training programs to enhance their teaching skills and knowledge.

Sick Leave: When teachers fall ill and are unable to perform their duties, sick leave ensures they have the necessary time to recover and return to work in good health.

Maternity Leave: Female teachers are granted maternity leave to ensure a smooth and healthy transition into motherhood. This is a crucial aspect of supporting women in the workforce.

Compassionate Leave: Compassionate leave allows teachers to take time off to deal with personal loss or bereavement. It acknowledges the need for emotional and mental well-being during challenging times.

Leave Process and Approval within GES

  • Teachers assigned to educational institutions under the GES can enjoy annual leave during holidays, subject to management’s agreement. However, this leave cannot commence until the teacher has completed their termly academic responsibilities.
  • All types of leave, whether paid or unpaid, require prior approval from management.
  • In cases where teachers are required to perform duties due to the service’s exigencies during their leave period, they will not forfeit their remaining leave days. Instead, they will be compensated for their time with transportation and travel expenses.

Duration of Annual Leave in GES

  • For teachers holding the rank of Teacher to Principal Superintendent, the annual leave duration is 21 working days.
  • Assistant Director II to Deputy Director ranks are entitled to 28 working days of annual leave.
  • Directors ranging from Director II to Director General enjoy the longest annual leave duration of 36 working days.

These various types of leave ensure that teachers can maintain a healthy work-life balance, pursue further education, and handle personal matters while continuing to provide quality education to their students.
