A Chemistry teacher from Opoku Ware Senior High School has earned prestigious recognition on the continental stage. Bismark Kwame Tunu, alongside seven other exceptional educators hailing from Kenya, Mauritania, Malawi, Mauritius, Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa, has been honored with the African Union’s Continental Best Teacher Award.

This remarkable accolade was presented to them during a special event organized to celebrate World Teachers’ Day, jointly hosted by the African Union Commission and UNESCO IICBA.

Mr. Tunu’s teaching philosophy revolves around bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge imparted in classrooms and its practical application in laboratories.

A pressing concern looms over the African continent, with estimates suggesting that millions of new teachers will be needed to meet the demands arising from increased educational attainment and population growth.

Achieving the educational targets outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals further compounds this challenge. However, recruiting an ample number of qualified teachers in a context where the teaching profession may not be perceived as attractive remains a formidable task.

The Continental Best Teacher Award, instituted by the African Union Commission in 2019, serves as a beacon of recognition for outstanding educators. It not only celebrates their exceptional contributions but also seeks to elevate their status within society.

The significance of honoring teachers through awards is emphasized in a report by the International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa. Such accolades serve to acknowledge the unique and invaluable role that teachers play in shaping the futures of their students, communities, and societies at large.

Mr. Tunu’s passion for teaching was ignited at a young age, inspired by his mother’s own career as an educator. His journey into teaching began during his mandatory national service at the South Suntreso Government Hospital, where he worked as a biomedical scientist. Here, he took the initiative to explain complex concepts and principles to students who were on attachment, laying the foundation for his future career.

Despite the demanding nature of his profession, he derives immense satisfaction from the positive impact he has on the lives of his students.

Notably, Mr. Tunu has expressed his concern about the lack of collaboration between industries and educational institutions. He aspires to provide his students with opportunities to experience firsthand the practical applications of what they learn in the classroom by facilitating partnerships with relevant industries.

We salute Mr. Tunu’s achievements and his vision for a more integrated and impactful education system.
