Football has long been more than just a sport — it is a powerful tool for education, empowerment, and community development.

Recognizing the tremendous potential of football to positively impact the lives of Ghanaian youth, the Ghana Football Association (GFA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, is joining forces with the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) to launch the highly anticipated FIFA Football for Schools project.

This transformative initiative is set to distribute 30,000 footballs to 3,000 public schools nationwide during the upcoming academic year.

With the official launch scheduled for August 10 to August 12, 2023, this program aims to enrich physical education in schools and provide a unique opportunity for students to engage in sports while learning valuable life skills.

The core objective of the FIFA Football for Schools project is to strengthen physical education programs across Ghana by providing essential resources and expertise to schools. The Ghana Football Association has revealed that the project entails training selected Physical Education (PE) Teachers from all regions of Ghana. FIFA Specialists will act as Trainee Trainers to equip these teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge to become agents of change.

Once trained, these PE Teachers will cascade their expertise to other educators in their respective regions, fostering a sustainable and far-reaching impact on sports education. The ripple effect of this training promises to reach schools, communities, and aspiring young football enthusiasts throughout the country.

The Ghana Football Association’s application for the FIFA Football for Schools Programme received a resounding endorsement from FIFA itself. After a meticulous review of the documentation provided, Director of FIFA Football for Schools, Fatimata Sidibe, expressed the administration’s approval for the implementation of the program in Ghana. This green light from FIFA further validates the significance and potential impact of the initiative.

In line with the nation’s commitment to gender equality and inclusion, the Ghana Football Association assured that the program will ensure gender parity by selecting mixed schools for participation. This move is not just about promoting equal opportunities but also about empowering young girls to participate in football from an early age.

In addition to providing the much-needed footballs, the FIFA Football for Schools administration will collaborate with the Ghana Football Association to introduce the Football for Schools mobile app in Ghana.

The app is designed to complement the physical education curriculum, offering educational resources, interactive content, and training modules for teachers and students alike. This technological integration is expected to enhance the learning experience and create a dynamic platform for engagement.

Recognizing the significance of this initiative in nurturing well-rounded individuals, the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports have pledged their support to the program. By actively collaborating with the Ghana Football Association, the government ministries aim to ensure the success of the project, positively impacting students aged 10 to 14 years across the nation.

Mr. Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, the President of the Ghana Football Association, expressed his excitement about the program’s approval and its potential to benefit schools, colleges, PE teachers, and students. He emphasized the GFA’s commitment to working diligently with FIFA and the government ministries to ensure the project’s resounding success.
