In a bold move to safeguard the integrity of Ghana’s education system, the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has embarked on a mission to call for the immediate reinstatement of Dr. Shine Agatha Ofori, the interdicted headmistress of West Africa Senior High School (WASS). The Ghana Education Service (GES) had taken this drastic action following allegations of unauthorized fee collection from students.
However, NAGRAT believes that this is just a symptom of larger challenges faced by senior high schools across the country.
During a press conference, Mr. Angel Carbonu, the president of NAGRAT, staunchly asserted that Dr. Shine Agatha Ofori did not commit any wrongdoing. Instead, he pointed out that the real problem lies in the lack of adequate financial resources allocated to schools. This scarcity of funds adversely affects the quality of education offered to students.
Mr. Carbonu accused the government of using the headmistress as a scapegoat for a more profound issue. He called on the authorities to shift their focus from penalizing individual headteachers to improving service delivery in schools nationwide. The challenges faced by West Africa Senior High School are, in fact, representative of a systemic problem that demands a comprehensive solution.
According to Mr. Carbonu, the issues plaguing the educational landscape transcend the boundaries of a single school. NAGRAT emphasizes that the problems faced by WASS are mirrored in several other senior high schools across Ghana. In light of this, the association urges the government to engage in constructive dialogue with stakeholders to review the Free SHS policy.
In their plea to the government, NAGRAT requests pragmatic decisions that prioritize the best interest of education. This includes the prompt reinstatement of Dr. Shine Agatha Ofori and any other headteachers facing similar situations. However, it goes beyond just addressing individual cases; it requires a comprehensive approach to uplift the entire education sector.
NAGRAT’s call for reinstatement is more than just a demand for justice; it serves as a clarion call for systemic reforms. To ensure a brighter future for Ghanaian students, the government must allocate sufficient financial resources to schools, support educators, and create an environment conducive to learning.
