In a move that brings joy and relief to thousands of National Service Personnel across the country, the Management of the National Service Scheme has successfully obtained government approval for an upward adjustment of their monthly allowances. The decision, which takes effect from January 2023, raises the allowance from GH¢559.04 to GH¢715.57.
This significant development follows a series of productive engagements between the National Service Scheme, Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and the Ministry of Finance.
The approval, communicated through an official letter dated 18th July 2023 and signed by the Deputy Minister for Finance, Hon. Abena Osei-Asare (MP), represents a tangible recognition of the valuable contributions made by the National Service Personnel to the nation’s development.
National Service is a vital period in the lives of many young graduates, offering them the opportunity to serve their country, gain valuable work experience, and prepare for their future careers.
With the new allowance of GH¢715.57, National Service Personnel will experience a substantial improvement in their financial well-being. This upward adjustment demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting and appreciating the efforts of these young individuals who diligently fulfill their service responsibilities.
The journey towards securing this approval was not an isolated effort. It was the result of productive collaborations between the National Service Scheme, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and the Ministry of Finance. The alignment of these institutions’ goals paved the way for meaningful discussions and negotiations to arrive at a fair and justifiable allowance increment.
Arrears Payment for Active Service Personnel
The approval of the allowance increment is retroactive to January 2023. This means that all National Service Personnel who were actively serving from January will be entitled to arrears to account for the difference in the adjusted allowance. These arrears will be paid accordingly, signifying a rightful recognition of their service during this period.
Management of the National Service Scheme acknowledges that some administrative processes need to be finalized before the arrears are disbursed. They appeal for patience from all National Service Personnel as they work diligently to ensure a smooth and timely payment process.
As we move forward, it is essential for the government, the National Service Scheme, and other stakeholders to continue working together to create an enabling environment for the holistic development of the youth. The National Service Scheme remains a critical avenue for nurturing the potential of young talents and molding them into future leaders of the nation.
