In an exciting development, Primetime, the organizers of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), a beloved and long-standing educational television quiz show, have unveiled a cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) application poised to participate unofficially in the grand finale of NSMQ 2023, scheduled for Monday, October 30.

Named “BrillaAI,” the remarkable NSMQ AI app is designed to listen to the riddles presented during the NSMQ competition. After just two riddle clues, BrillaAI endeavors to swiftly and accurately provide an answer in a distinct Ghanaian accent.

What makes BrillaAI even more fascinating is that it comprises four distinct machine learning systems working in unison in real-time.

Here is how it all comes together: when a question is read during the riddles round, the AI system’s first task is to transcribe the speech accurately. Once that is accomplished, the system needs to identify the beginning of the riddle to determine whether it should attempt to answer it.

After establishing the riddle’s starting point, the AI must differentiate between the clues and non-clues within the riddle. Subsequently, this information is relayed to the question-answering system, which strives to formulate the answer.

Once a plausible answer is generated, it is then passed on to the text-to-speech system, which renders the response with an authentic Ghanaian accent.

One of the primary challenges faced by the BrillaAI team is determining the precise moment to provide an accurate answer to a riddle. It is a race against time, as the AI’s response must be available before the human contestants can deliver their answers.

This groundbreaking open-source project is not just about competition; it also seeks to explore the vast potential of Artificial Intelligence within the context of national competitions and the broader education sector.

By doing so, it aligns itself with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 4, which aims to ensure equitable and universal access to quality education.

The brilliant minds behind this innovation are working tirelessly to enhance the features of this technological marvel. As we approach the grand finale of NSMQ 2023, all eyes will be on BrillaAI as it goes head-to-head with human contestants, pushing the boundaries of what AI can achieve in the realm of education and intellectual competition. Stay tuned for an unforgettable showdown!
