For the past three decades, the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) has been the educational television quiz that captivates audiences with its challenging riddles and highlights the brilliance of young minds. However, as we approach the grand finale of NSMQ 2023, something extraordinary is set to unfold.
The organizers, Primetime, have introduced a groundbreaking Artificial Intelligence App named BrillaAI, which will compete unofficially alongside the human contestants on Monday, October 30.
BrillaAI is not your ordinary AI. It has been meticulously designed to listen to the clues in the riddles presented during the NSMQ competition. After just two clues, it is primed to provide an answer to the riddle, all delivered in a Ghanaian accent.
This technological marvel comprises four distinct machine learning systems working together in real time to accomplish this incredible feat.
The AI system’s journey begins with the transcription of the spoken riddle. It must first accurately transcribe the speech as it is delivered. Then, the system must decipher the start of the riddle to determine whether it should attempt to answer.
Once the start is identified, the AI needs to distinguish between the clues and non-clues within the riddle. After this, the information is swiftly passed on to the question-answering system, which tirelessly works to generate a response.
Once a response is ready, it is handed over to the text-to-speech system, which vocalizes the answer with an authentic Ghanaian accent.
One of the most significant challenges faced in developing BrillaAI is determining precisely when to answer a riddle. The AI needs to provide its answer before the human contestants, making timing a crucial factor.
This endeavor is not just about showcasing the capabilities of artificial intelligence; it is also an open-source project with a more profound purpose. NSMQ aims to explore the potential of artificial intelligence within the national competition and the broader education sector.
It aspires to ensure equitable and universal access to quality education, aligning with Goal Four of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
The researchers working tirelessly behind this innovation are committed to enhancing the features of BrillaAI, making it a true technological beauty and an intriguing addition to the NSMQ grand finale.
