Dr. Christian Addai-Poku, the Registrar of the National Teaching Council, has sounded the alarm about the high attrition rate plaguing Ghana’s education sector. He emphasized that this concerning trend poses a significant threat to the future of the nation’s education and overall development.
He has called upon the government and all relevant stakeholders to take immediate action and implement effective measures to address this issue, thus averting a looming crisis.
During his address on the first day of a two-day symposium leading up to this year’s Ghana Teacher Prize event in Takoradi, located in the Western Region of Ghana, the Registrar shared some eye-opening statistics.
Earlier this year, over 16,000 Ghanaian teachers applied for positions in the UK’s Department of Education.
Astonishingly, by June 13, 2023, a staggering 10,000 of these applicants, holding Ghana Teacher Licenses, were granted certification to work in the UK without undergoing any further assessments, such as the qualified teacher status test, by the UK government.
The symposium itself brought together a diverse array of education practitioners, academics, and policymakers.
Additionally, it provided a stage for the shortlisted award winners to highlight their unique contributions that earned them national recognition. The event delved deeply into the theme of this year’s World Teachers Day celebration.
Dr. Addai-Poku stressed that, despite the annual production of a substantial number of qualified teachers in Ghana, the persistent high attrition rate continues to result in a shortage of educators across the country.
He commended all stakeholders in Ghana’s education sector for their relentless efforts in striving to provide the best education for the nation’s future leaders. He also expressed his commitment to collaborate with both local and international agencies willing to partner in shaping the training and professionalism of Ghanaian teachers, ultimately contributing to the transformation of the nation’s economy.
