The National Teaching Council (NTC) is set to announce a new pass mark for the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination. As part of the new GTLE reform, the pass mark for pre-service teachers from tertiary education institutions will be raised to 70 percent, replacing the previous pass mark of 50 percent in the traditional Ghana teacher licensure examination (GTLE).

In a discussion, Christian Addai-Poku, the Registrar of the Council, revealed that the policy regarding the revised licensure examination pass mark is pending final approval. However, he emphasized that the new pass mark for the reformed GTLE will be 70 percent, a significant increase from the previous requirement.

When asked about the format of the reformed teacher licensure examination, the Registrar stated that for each subject, there will be multiple-choice questions. The exception to this rule will be the general paper, where candidates will be required to express themselves in writing. All other subjects will consist solely of multiple-choice questions.
Reason for GTLE pass mark revision
The decision to raise the pass mark from 50 percent to 70 percent stems from concerns expressed by Mr. David Prah, Deputy Director for Ghana TVET Service, during a meeting with the management of the National Teaching Council.
Mr. Prah highlighted the low pass mark as a critical issue affecting the licensure examination’s quality and the professionalism and practice of teachers. He argued that a 50 percent pass mark effectively means that teachers are licensed to teach despite having a significant knowledge deficit.
In response to these concerns, the National Teaching Council made the decision to increase the pass mark for the Ghana teacher licensure examination, aiming to ensure that teachers entering classrooms possess a higher level of competence.
This adjustment is seen as a necessary step toward improving the overall quality of education and the professionalism of teachers in Ghana.
