Ranks in Ghana Education Service, their qualifications & how to attain them

In the Ghana Education Service, there are a total of thirteen (13) ranks. Each of these ranks have its own qualifications and accompanying tasks.

In today’s article, GESHub.org will walk you through all the thirteen (13) ranks, their qualifications and how to attain them.

The ranks from the highest to lowest are:

  1. Director General
  2. Deputy Director General
  3. Director I
  4. Director II
  5. Deputy Director
  6. Assistant Director I
  7. Assistant Director II
  8. Principal Superintendent
  9. Senior Superintendent I
  10. Senior Superintendent II
  11. Superintendent I
  12. Superintendent II
  13. Pupil Teacher

Ranks in GES

Director General

This rank is solely based on political appointment. This means the government of the country has the liberty to appoint anyone it deems qualified to make the affairs of Education as the Director-General.

Deputy Director-General

The Deputy Director-General works as the assistant to the Director-General of Education in executing his core mandate.

In Ghana, there are two (2) Deputy Director-General of Education positions. These are:

1. Deputy Director-General of Education in charge of Access and Quality.

2. Deputy Director-General of Education in charge of Management Services.

Director I

The Director I rank is obtained as a result of long service. People is this rank are usually Divisional / Regional Directors of Education in the Country.

Director II

This rank can also be attained through long service.  They are mostly the District Directors of Education. They supervise the activities of the stakeholders in their respective Districts.

Deputy Director

Deputy Director of Education, as the title implies, are appointed as assistant District Directors to the District Directors of Education.

This rank is also obtained through long service.

Assistant Director I

Attained through long service, the Assistant Director I can be appointed by the Management of the Ghana Education Service as Circuit Supervisors or Head of Senior High Schools.

Assistant Director II

This rank is attained through either promotion upon acquiring a Master’s Degree or Ph.D. or through long service. An Assistant Director II can be appointed by GES to Head a Basic School.

Principal Superintendent

This rank in the Ghana Education Service is the entry point for first-degree holders of the service. It can also be attained through long service.

It is a minimum requirement for appointment as a teacher in a Senior High School in the country.

Now, it is also the minimum requirement for appointment as a Basic School teacher in Ghana.

Senior Superintendent I

This is attained through long service. An employee with the Service is required to work for four (4) on the rank of Senior Superintendent II to attain this rank.

Senior Superintendent II

This is the entry point for Diploma Certificate holders in the Ghana Education Service. It used to be the minimum requirement for an appointment as a Basic School teacher.

Superintendent I

This is attained through long service. An employee with the Service is required to work for four (4) on the rank of Superintendent II to attain this rank.

Superintendent II

This is the entry point for Certificate A (Cert A) holders in the Ghana Education Service.

Pupil-Teacher

This is the rank of employees of the Service with entry level of SSCE, WASSCE and GCE, as well as those who could not pass all their papers in College before employment.

Previously, whether one passed all their courses in College, you will be posted before you take steps to resit for the papers you failed.

Most people never rewrite their failed papers.
