In an effort to simplify the school selection process for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates, Mark Mensah, the National Coordinator for the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS), as shared to adesuafie.com, has unveiled a comprehensive breakdown of the new procedure.
This revamp in the CSSPS aims to make it easier for students to choose their preferred schools as they transition to the next phase of their education journey.
According to Mark Mensah, BECE graduates are now required to select a total of 11 schools during the CSSPS application process. The selection process begins with choosing the initial 6 schools and concludes with the selection of the final 5.
Category A Schools
In the initial 5 schools, there is a special category known as Category A, which includes 92 schools. Among these schools, 5 are designated as STEM schools, 34 as TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) institutions, and the remainder are senior high and technical schools. BECE graduates are allowed to choose only 1 school from Category A.
Category B Schools
Category B encompasses 260 schools, and students can select a maximum of 2 schools from this category. Similar to Category A, it also comprises 34 TVET schools, along with other senior high and technical institutions.
Category C Schools
The largest category, Category C, comprises 574 schools. Within this group, 154 schools are TVET institutions, while the rest are senior high and technical schools. BECE graduates are given the flexibility to choose up to 5 schools from Category C.
Category D
Lastly, Category D includes all 928 schools in Ghana, as each school in the country offers both day and boarding options. Students are required to select at least one compulsory day school from this category, located within a 16km radius of their catchment area.
Alternatively, they can opt for any of the schools listed in the appendix, known as special boarding schools. This approach ensures that every student has access to a nearby day school or a suitable boarding option.
Mark Mensah emphasized that these updates to the CSSPS are intended to streamline the school selection process, making it more accessible and efficient for BECE graduates. Over the past three years, there have been instances where schools still had vacancies even after the initial placement rounds, highlighting the need for this refined approach.
