In a powerful step towards addressing youth unemployment in Ghana, the World Bank has pledged its support for a new Growth and Jobs Strategy designed to create opportunities for more than 500,000 young Ghanaians entering the job market each year.

This exciting announcement came after a high-level meeting at the World Bank headquarters in Washington, D.C., between Anna Bjerde, the Bank’s Managing Director of Operations, and Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson (MP), Ghana’s Minister for Finance. The two leaders discussed collaborative efforts to design and implement a strategy centered on job creation, skills development, and inclusive economic growth.

“This initiative reflects our shared priority of unlocking opportunities for young people,” said Bjerde. “We are proud to work with Ghana on a strategy that will create jobs and build a stronger, more resilient economy.”

The urgency of the matter is clear: Ghana, like many countries across Africa, faces the pressing challenge of integrating a rapidly growing youth population into the labor force. With over half a million young people entering the job market every year, the need for practical, scalable solutions has never been greater.

Dr. Forson welcomed the World Bank’s backing, noting that the partnership marks a crucial milestone in Ghana’s journey toward sustainable development and economic inclusion.

“This partnership is a major step forward in our efforts to provide decent and sustainable jobs for our youth,” Dr. Forson stated.

The Growth and Jobs Strategy will focus on three main pillars:

  1. Skills Development – Equipping youth with the technical, entrepreneurial, and soft skills needed for modern job markets.
  2. Job Creation – Promoting private sector growth, innovation, and investment to generate employment.
  3. Inclusive Growth – Ensuring that economic opportunities are accessible to all segments of the population, especially women and marginalized groups.

It’s also a call to action for local stakeholders, businesses, and development partners to align efforts in building a future where Ghana’s youth can thrive.

Stay tuned for updates on this transformative partnership and the rollout of programs under the Growth and Jobs Strategy.
