The Ghana Education Service (GES) has recently revealed an exciting addition to the Senior High School (SHS) curriculum, introducing five innovative elective subjects. This initiative, overseen by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), aims to equip students with contemporary skills and knowledge, preparing them for the evolving demands of the global job market.

These new electives promise to broaden the educational horizons of Ghanaian students and include;

  1. Engineering Science and Robotics
  2. Biomedical Science
  3. Aviation and Aerospace Engineering,
  4. Robotics, and
  5. Manufacturing Engineering.

1. Engineering Science and Robotics

This subject merges principles of engineering with the dynamic field of robotics, offering students hands-on experience in designing and building robotic systems. The curriculum covers essential engineering concepts, programming, and automation, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. As industries worldwide increasingly integrate robotics, this subject positions students at the forefront of technological innovation.

2. Biomedical Science

The introduction of Biomedical Science provides students with a foundational understanding of biological and medical sciences. This elective is designed to inspire future healthcare professionals and researchers by covering topics such as human anatomy, physiology, and medical technologies. It offers a solid preparatory ground for students interested in pursuing careers in medicine, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare research.

3. Aviation and Aerospace Engineering

Aviation and Aerospace Engineering is an exciting addition that explores the principles of flight, aircraft design, and space exploration. This subject aims to ignite interest in the aerospace industry, providing students with knowledge about aerodynamics, propulsion systems, and avionics. It is an excellent opportunity for those aspiring to become pilots, aerospace engineers, or aviation experts.

4. Robotics

While Engineering Science and Robotics offers a blend, the standalone Robotics subject delves deeper into the intricacies of robotic technologies. 5. Manufacturing Engineering

Enhancing the Curriculum

In addition to these new subjects, the core curriculum continues to encompass vital areas such as English Language, Mathematics, General Science, and Social Studies. A wide array of elective subjects remains available, including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computing, and more. The introduction of these new electives aims to diversify the educational experience, catering to varied interests and career aspirations.

Availability and Implementation
