In the heart of Akim Swedru Constituency in the Eastern Region of Ghana, political fervor is on the rise as the Controller and Accountant-General, Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem, has officially thrown his hat into the ring for the forthcoming parliamentary primary elections of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
This bold move by the head of the Controller and Accountant-General Department sets the stage for a riveting showdown as he seeks to unseat the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Kennedy Osei Nyarko, who also happens to be the Chairman of the Select Committee on Roads and Transport in Parliament.
Kennedy Osei Nyarko, a three-term unopposed MP, is gearing up for a fourth run to retain his seat for the ruling NPP. However, the winds of change seem to be blowing in Akim Swedru, with reports suggesting that approximately 80 percent of the 306 delegates have switched allegiance to join Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem’s campaign team.
The constituency and its people, it seems, are not entirely satisfied with the leadership and performance of the incumbent MP.
Mr. Kwaning-Bosompem, a Chartered Management Accountant, made his intention clear after a mammoth health walk in Akim Swedru on Sunday, October 29. Surrounded by an enthusiastic crowd, he expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming trust and support he has received from traditional rulers, youth, and grassroots supporters.
“I am very delighted for the massive support today,” he said. “You are gathered here to support the developmental agenda of Akim Swedru Constituency, and I am happy you came out in your numbers. Let’s continue the genuine path we have chosen because I believe that Akim Swedru needs a new leader for fresh ideals to ensure total development.”
If given the nod, Mr. Kwaning-Bosompem has pledged to take bold steps to foster development and secure the Akyem Swedru seat for the NPP. Notably, he encouraged his supporters to maintain a respectful and constructive tone during the campaign, emphasizing the importance of unity within the NPP ahead of the 2024 general elections.
On the sidelines, he extended a prayerful message, hoping that Kennedy Osei Nyarko would consider stepping aside or reconsider his decision to contest in the primaries, having dutifully served the constituents for over a decade.
This move sets the stage for an intriguing battle of ideas and leadership in the Akim Swedru Constituency, as both candidates vie for the trust and support of the NPP members and, ultimately, the constituents.
