In the world of academic competitions, there are few events as prestigious and fiercely contested as the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) in Ghana.
In 2023, Selinam Mortey, a remarkable young student, not only secured victory for his school, the Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC), but also fulfilled a prophecy he made back in junior high school. This heartwarming story of determination, sibling rivalry, and triumph is nothing short of inspiring.
According to his mother, Elizabeth Mortey, Selinam’s older brother, Selassie Mortey, represented PRESEC in the 2019 NSMQ. The competition was incredibly close, with PRESEC narrowly missing the trophy to Augusco by just 5 points.
It was a bittersweet moment for the family, as they cheered for Selassie while silently longing for that elusive victory.
In the midst of the excitement and tension, something remarkable happened. Selinam, a bright young student in Junior High School 2 at the time, prophesied that he would not only attend PRESEC but also emerge victorious in the NSMQ.
This prophecy was inspired by witnessing his older brother’s near miss, and it became a driving force for Selinam’s aspirations.
Fast forward to 2023, and Selinam Mortey found himself in the very position he had dreamt of since his junior high school days. Representing PRESEC, he faced fierce competition from other top schools. With unwavering determination and a burning desire to avenge his brother’s loss, Selinam led his team to victory in the NSMQ.
PRESEC clinched the title with an impressive 40 points, outshining Achimota School and Opoku Ware School, who scored 28 and 23 points, respectively.
Selinam’s remarkable journey and the fulfillment of his prophecy have not only brought pride to his family but have also made him a source of inspiration for many young students aspiring to achieve greatness in the NSMQ.
