The Ghana Education Service (GES) has taken a firm stand against examination malpractice, announcing that teachers found guilty of such misconduct will face termination of their appointments. This decisive measure follows a report from the West African Examination Council (WAEC) revealing the arrest of 19 individuals, including teachers, for their involvement in examination malpractice during the recently concluded BECE.

Dr. Kwabena Tandoh, Deputy Director General of GES, reiterated the organization’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the examination process. He confirmed that the termination of appointments for teachers implicated in malpractices is a standard protocol, emphasizing that GES dismisses several teachers annually for such infractions, even though these actions are not always made public.

Adding to the discourse, Dr. Peter Partey-Anti, Executive Director of the Institute for Education Studies (IFEST), noted the need for stringent measures to curb examination malpractice. He urged WAEC to report teachers assigned as invigilators for the 2024 BECE, who are found guilty of malpractices, to the National Teaching Council (NTC) for further action.

“I have said that apart from the investigation and other things that WAEC is doing, WAEC should officially report these teachers to the National Teaching Council for them also to take actions on this behavior which constitutes unprofessional misconduct,” Dr. Partey-Anti stated in an interview with Starr News.

Dr. Partey-Anti highlighted the importance of minimizing examination malpractice to ensure fair and unbiased assessments for students. He commended the efforts to maintain the integrity of the BECE, noting that this year’s exercise had minimal incidents. He reminded teachers of their crucial role in preparing students for exams and stressed the importance of allowing students to demonstrate their true capabilities without unethical assistance.

“It is not advisable for any teacher to engage himself in this exercise in that direction because you are supposed to prepare the candidate for the exams,” he said. “You must allow the candidate to work with his capability and ability to be able to know where his performance is and that is what we wish that every teacher will do. Unfortunately, we didn’t get that and some teachers found themselves in that light,” Dr. Partey-Anti added.
