The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a strong directive to all Heads of Senior High Schools (SHS) across the country to refund any monies collected from students or parents for the 2025 WASSCE practical examinations.
According to an official letter dated 28th July 2025 and signed by Prof. Smile Dzisi (Mrs), the Acting Deputy Director-General (Management Services), the Government of Ghana has already released full funding to cater for the costs of the 2025 WASSCE practicals. This covers all necessary materials and resources required for the smooth conduct of the exams.
The directive follows growing concerns from GES management that some school heads had continued to collect funds from candidates, parents, and guardians despite the government’s full financial provision for the practical components of the examination.
GES has outlined three key actions for compliance:
- Immediate Refunds – All monies collected from students or parents specifically for the 2025 WASSCE practicals must be refunded without delay.
- Proper Documentation – The refund process should be properly recorded, and official receipts must be issued to acknowledge all repayments.
- Notification to Regional Directors – Heads must inform their respective Regional Directors once refunds have been completed.
The GES emphasized that adhering to this directive is crucial in reducing the financial burden on students and their families. It also ensures that no learner is prevented from participating in the exams due to the inability to pay.
Furthermore, the Service warned that failure to comply with this instruction will be considered a serious breach of official conduct and may attract administrative sanctions.
Regional Directors have been tasked to disseminate this directive to all Heads of schools through their respective Municipal, Metro, and District Directors of Education.
