The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially announced a mid-term break for all Basic Schools across Ghana, bringing welcome relief to students, teachers, and parents nationwide.
According to an official communication dated 26th February 2026, Management of GES confirmed that the approved mid-term break will take place on:
Monday, 9th March and Tuesday, 10th March, 2026
All learners are expected to resume school on Wednesday, 11th March, 2026 to continue academic work for the remainder of the term. This directive applies to Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High Schools (JHS) across the country.
Official Details of the GES Mid-Term Break
In a letter signed by Munawaru Issahaku (PhD), Ag. Deputy Director-General (Q & A), Regional Directors of Education have been instructed to communicate the break to all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Directors to ensure that:
- Heads of Basic Schools
- Teachers
- Parents
- Learners
are duly informed.
GES emphasized the importance of using the short break to rest and recharge before continuing academic activities.
Current Academic Term in Focus (Second Term – 2025/2026)
As the first term has already concluded, schools are currently in the second term of the 2025/2026 academic year.
Second Term Details:
- Reopening Date: January 8, 2026
- Mid-Term Break: March 9–10, 2026
- Term Ends: April 1, 2026
- Vacation: April 2 – April 20, 2026
The second term spans 12 weeks and plays a crucial role in academic progression before students transition into the final term.
Upcoming National Examination – BECE 2026
GES has also confirmed that the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for final-year JHS students will take place from:
May 4 to May 11, 2026
This examination is a major milestone for candidates preparing to enter Senior High School. Parents and guardians are encouraged to support learners in their preparation during and after the mid-term break.
