Popular actor and politician, John Dumelo, recently made good on a unique promise that had social media buzzing. On October 22, Dumelo took to his social media handle to make an unusual pledge.
He vowed to walk barefoot, but not just any walk – he promised to walk backward from the University of Ghana’s main gate to the entrance of the prestigious Presbyterian Boys Senior High School (PRESEC).
What prompted this rather unusual commitment? The backdrop to this promise was a high-stakes competition between Dumelo’s alma mater, Achimota Senior High School (SHS), and PRESEC. Dumelo, a proud Achimotan, declared that if PRESEC emerged victorious in the competition, he would carry out this unique feat.
Fast forward to October 30, and PRESEC did indeed clinch victory, securing their eighth consecutive win in the tournament. Netizens on social media were quick to remind Dumelo of his promise, and he assured them that he would fulfill it on October 31 at 4 p.m.
However, a slight change of plans occurred. Instead of starting the backward walk from the University of Ghana campus as initially intended, the starting point was moved to the Legon Mall, which is located opposite the school. The walk commenced a little later than planned, around 4:50 p.m.

Dumelo, dressed in a black T-shirt and shorts adorned with the Ghanaian flag, embarked on his backward journey, flanked by two cars. Media personnel were there to document every step of his unique adventure.
After 25 minutes and 40 seconds, Dumelo arrived safely at the entrance of PRESEC, successfully completing the walk and fulfilling his pledge. The entire spectacle was a testament to his determination and commitment to keeping his word.
Following this extraordinary event, Dumelo expressed his thoughts to GhanaWeb. He questioned why PRESEC should continue participating in the competition, having secured eight wins already. He also revealed that Achimota SHS is already gearing up for the next competition, and he has faith that his alma mater will emerge victorious.
In a show of confidence, Dumelo mentioned that he would make another pledge at the next competition. His unwavering support for Achimota SHS and his willingness to fulfill such an unusual promise certainly earned him accolades from social media users. Some even saw this feat as a testament to his competence as a public figure and officeholder.
John Dumelo’s backward walk was not just a fulfillment of a unique promise but also a reminder that we should always stand by our commitments, no matter how unusual or challenging they may be.
It was a demonstration of his passion for his alma mater and his dedication to keeping his word, which is a quality we can all admire. As he mentioned, the future competitions will undoubtedly be something to look forward to, with the hope of seeing Achimota SHS rise to the challenge.
