The Ministry of Education has received a major boost as the government has granted financial clearance for the recruitment of 6,100 additional teachers to address staffing shortages across the country. The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, November 19.
According to the Minister, education remains Ghana’s largest employer, and the government is committed to strengthening the sector by ensuring that all schools are adequately staffed. He emphasized that the newly approved recruitment forms part of broader efforts to enhance teaching and learning nationwide.
Mr. Iddrisu also responded to reports of protests by some teacher trainees from the 2023 cohort, who have been demanding postings and salary validation. He clarified that this group has already been fully accounted for within the approved recruitment batch.
“I understand that some striking teachers are looking for us on the streets of Accra. Let me respond to them that the Cabinet has approved the recruitment of 6,100 more teachers, and therefore that category of teachers, which belongs to the 2023 cohort, is adequately captured,” he stated.
The Minister expressed surprise that individuals from the same cohort were demonstrating instead of cooperating with the Ministry to complete the necessary administrative processes. He encouraged them to return to the appropriate offices for verification, audit, and identification in order to be fully reinstated and paid.
Mr. Iddrisu assured all affected trainees that the government remains committed to addressing their concerns promptly and ensuring smooth integration into the education service.
