The National Teaching Council (NTC), in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES), has announced the commencement of a nationwide renewal and issuance of new license cards for all professional teachers. This initiative is in accordance with Section 60(d) of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act 2020 (Act 1023), which mandates the NTC to register and license qualified teachers.
Having begun the licensing of teachers in 2021, the NTC issued license cards valid for three years. These initial licenses are now due for renewal. The rollout is set to begin on Monday, November 25, 2024, in the Greater Accra Region, with a complete nationwide schedule to be announced soon.
As part of this renewal process, the NTC has redesigned the license cards to include additional information such as subject specialization and category. Additionally, a QR code will now be featured on the card to allow verification of a teacher’s registration status.
Teachers will be issued new cards regardless of the expiry status of their current cards. However, the possession of a new card will not automatically indicate that a teacher is in good standing.
Teachers with expired licenses are required to fulfill all renewal conditions, including earning the necessary Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points. Teachers are urged to participate actively in Professional Learning Communities (PLC) and CPD programs to gain the points required for renewal.
To facilitate the renewal process, teachers must visit the NTC portal (tpg.ntc.gov.gh) to update their profiles. Detailed guidance can also be found at ntc.gov.gh/licence-update/.
It is important to note that the new license cards will now have a validity of five years. However, teachers’ registrations, which are critical for their professional status, must be renewed annually and will expire on December 31 each year. Renewal of a license card does not automatically renew the teacher’s registration.
The GES has directed all Regional Directors to disseminate this information to teachers in their respective districts to ensure compliance. Teachers are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this initiative to maintain their professional standing and align with the updated standards of the NTC.
The rollout marks a significant step in enhancing the professionalism and accountability of teachers across Ghana, reinforcing their role as key players in the country’s educational development.
