In a recent development, the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has announced the withdrawal of the subject “Our World Our People” (OWOP) from the Standards-Based curriculum for Basic Schools in Ghana.
The decision, set to take effect from the upcoming academic year, stems from a comprehensive review conducted by NaCCA, which identified overlapping content with the Religious and Moral Education (RME) curriculum.
The management of NaCCA has undertaken a critical examination and comparison of both the RME and OWOP curricula. The findings revealed striking similarities in sub-strands and focal areas, suggesting a redundancy of knowledge between the two subjects.
Additionally, feedback from teachers echoed the observations made by the Council, further emphasizing the need for streamlining the curriculum to enhance learners’ understanding.
By withdrawing OWOP from the curriculum, NaCCA aims to streamline the educational framework, allowing facilitators to concentrate on the unique strands outlined in the Religious and Moral Education curriculum.
This move is anticipated to eliminate redundancy, thereby enriching the overall learning experience for students. With this modification, educators can now channel their efforts into delivering a more focused and enriched educational experience for students.
