The 2023 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) has been cast into uncertainty as a fervent supporter of Prempeh College seeks to halt the grand finale, scheduled to take place on October 30th at the National Theatre in Accra.
In an unexpected turn of events, a mysterious plaintiff, represented by legal counsel Kwame Boateng Atuahene, Esq., has filed an interlocutory injunction application at a High Court.
The purpose of this application is to prevent Primetime Limited, the organizing body, from proceeding with the much-anticipated event until the “final determination of the matter in terms of the affidavit in support.”
The identity of the plaintiff and the details of the affidavit remain closely guarded secrets, known only to the involved parties. However, this legal imbroglio stems from a dispute between Prempeh College and Primetime Limited regarding a riddle posed during the semifinal stage of the NSMQ, where Opoku Ware School emerged victorious over Prempeh College.
The heart of the matter lies in the interpretation of the linear superposition principle, a concept fundamental to the world of science and mathematics. Prempeh College has asserted that the principle of superposition is synonymous with the principle of linear superposition, and as such, their answer during the competition was valid.
In response, Primetime Limited, the organizers of NSMQ, has contended that the final judgment of contestants’ answers rests with the Quiz Mistress, Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann. She exercises her discretion to determine whether a contestant’s response is sufficiently responsive to the question posed.
According to Primetime Limited, Professor Kaufmann opted to maintain the precise original key, indicating that in her professional opinion, Prempeh College’s answer did not align with the target key.
The ensuing dispute has escalated to the point where Prempeh College and Primetime Limited seem to have reached an impasse, with each party unwavering in their stance. In an attempt to break the deadlock, Prempeh College has called for an independent consultant or body to arbitrate the matter, asserting that one cannot be a judge in their own case.
They are resolute in their belief that their answer was correct and have indicated their willingness to explore all available avenues, including legal action, to ensure a fair resolution.
As the legal battle unfolds, the fate of the 2023 NSMQ grand finale hangs in the balance. The situation raises important questions about the rules and adjudication of the prestigious competition and emphasizes the need for a fair and impartial resolution.
