In a recent development that has stirred debate in the National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ) community, Primetime has officially responded to a protest lodged by Prempeh College following the semi-finals of NSMQ 2023.
The dispute revolved around a riddle and the principle of superposition. Prempeh College, Opoku Ware School, and Pope John Senior High School were the three schools involved in this controversy.
The dispute prompted a detailed response from Primetime, which is responsible for organizing the NSMQ competition.
In the official response, it was revealed that Prempeh College’s protest was centered around a riddle in which the answer was disputed. The key issue was whether the principle of superposition is synonymous with the principle of linear superposition.
Prempeh College argued that their contestant’s answer should be accepted as correct and that the results of the contest should be overturned in their favor.
However, Primetime engaged their Physics Consultant, Dr. Amos Kuditcher, and the Quiz Mistress, Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, to evaluate the matter.
Dr. Kuditcher and Professor Effah Kaufmann provided their analysis of the dispute. They emphasized that the clues provided in the riddle pointed to the concept of linear superposition, not exponential superposition.
While they acknowledged the existence of nonlinear superposition in physics, they argued that the clues within the riddle clearly supported the response “(Principle of) Linear Superposition.” Clues 4 and 5 were particularly highlighted as indicative of linear superposition, and examples such as electric field and scalar potential calculations in clue 5 directly pointed to this principle.
The Quiz Mistress, Professor Effah Kaufmann, exercised her professional discretion in assessing the contestants’ response. She opted to maintain the more precise original key rather than accepting the Prempeh College contestant’s answer.
According to her, the two answers were not synonymous, and the original key was more appropriate.
Primetime emphasized its commitment to fairness and impartiality in the NSMQ competition. They acknowledged the importance of allowing schools to protest and seek resolution for perceived discrepancies, and stated that they take measures to ensure fairness.
They encouraged Prempeh College to utilize the procedure outlined in the NSMQ Rules for addressing grievances instead of resorting to social media campaigns that could tarnish the competition’s reputation.
Primetime firmly denied any bias or manipulation of contests in favor of specific schools. They stressed their dedication to maintaining the integrity of the NSMQ and ensuring that all schools have an equal opportunity to compete.
They also expressed appreciation for the effort and investment that contestants and trainers put into the competition, highlighting the challenges and hard work involved in preparing for the NSMQ.
Primetime commended all the participating schools for their passionate and exciting contests in NSMQ 2023. They wished Prempeh College the best in future editions of the competition, reiterating their commitment to upholding the competition’s integrity and impartiality.
